Supper Club

2015-16, acrylic and house paint on wall, 24x10 feet

Description: In Supper Club, the viewer sees a kind of Bizarro World version of Da Vinci’s Last Supper and Norman Rockwell’s populist Thanksgiving tableau, Freedom from Want. However, instead of creating an image of salvation or American exceptionalism, we see an image filled with grotesque figures that are both invented and based on figures from art history, contemporary culture and my own family and friends. These figures surround a fourteen-foot-long table, which covers a cornucopia-like feast. This feast can be seen overflowing with food and emblematic objects. These various visual elements create a dense horror-vacui like composition that encourages each viewer to create their meaning from the visual miasma present in this 24 x 10-foot mural.

Description: This image of Supper Club was the first phase of the mural completed in three weeks at TechArtista, a co-working space in St. Louis. After painting the wall black, I painted Supper Club to depict to capture the loneliness felt even when one is surrounded other people, and perhaps cut off from one’s group of choice.
